Joseph Mumfre, Axeman from New Orleans

By R. March 12th, 2010, under Famous Crime Story, Murder, Unsolved

There are murders in crime history that still remain unsolved. The case of Joseph Mumfre, Axeman from New Orleans is one of them.

On May 23, 1918, an Italian grocer named Joseph Maggio and his wife were butchered while sleeping in their apartment above the Maggio grocery store. Upon investigation, the police discovered that a panel in the rear door had been chiseled out, providing a way in for the killer. The murder weapon, an axe, was found in the apartment, still coated with the Maggio’s blood. Nothing in the house had been stolen, including jewelry and money that were nearly in plain sight. The only clue that was discovered was a message that had been written in chalk near the victim’s home. It read: “Mrs. Joseph Maggio will sit up tonight. Just write Mrs. Toney”. An ax (propped up in their bath) and a straight razor were found at the scene. The razor belonged to Joseph’s brother, Andrew, who found the bodies with brother Jake. Andrew was arrested but cleared for lack of evidence. Other attacks came two weeks later. Grocer Louis Besumer survived, but his mistress Anna Lowe did not. In March the Axman performed the grisly act of killing a father and his two-year-old daughter (the mother survived). The Maggios were the first of no fewer than twelve victims of a murderer who killed until the autumn of 1919 and stopped as mysteriously as he had started. The killer who earned the sobriquet “Axman of New Orleans” was perhaps the first serial killer since Jack the Ripper who wrote tauntingly about his exploits to the press. Each victim (most were Italian and either grocers or bakers) was brutally attacked in his own residence by an assailant who gained entry by carefully chiseling a panel out of the backdoor. And on each occasion, the murder weapon was left behind for the police to find. This bloody bogeyman wrote to the New Orleans Times-Picayune to directly threaten the city. His missive postmarked “Hell, March 13, 1919” was addressed to “Esteemed Mortal”: “They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me for I am invisible, even as the ether that that surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the Axeman.” Claiming a “close relationship with the Angel of Death”, he continued: “at 12:15 (earthly time) on next Tuesday night, I am going to pass over New Orleans. In my infinite mercy, I am going to make a little proposition to you people. Here it is: I am very fond of jazz music, and I and I swear by all the devils in the nether regions that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you people.” He went on to write that any “people who do not jazz it on Tuesday night” would “get the axe”.

The Axeman murdered a total of eight people before the killings stopped. There was no evidence to link the only suspect, Joseph Mumfre, to the crimes.

Lawyer is Smartest Man

By R. March 5th, 2010, under Law

A doctor, a lawyer, a little boy and a priest were out for a Sunday afternoon flight on a small private plane. Suddenly, the plane developed engine trouble. In spite of the best efforts of the pilot the plane started to go down. Finally the pilot grabbed a parachute, yelled to the passengers that they had better jump, and bailed out. Unfortunately there were only three parachutes remaining.
The doctor grabbed one and said, “I’m a doctor, I save lives, so I must live,” and jumped out.
The lawyer then said, “I’m the smartest man in the world, I deserve to live!” He grabbed a parachute and jumped.

The priest looked at the little boy and said, “My son, I’ve lived a long and full life. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you. Take the last parachute and live in peace.”
The little boy handed the parachute back to the priest and said,
“Not to worry, Father. The smartest man in the world just took off with my backpack.”

“I have had all I can stand”

By R. February 21st, 2010, under Crash

FEBRUARY 18–The man suspected of intentionally crashing an airplane into a Texas office building today appears to have posted a lengthy online diatribe attacking the Internal Revenue Service and declaring that, “I know I’m hardly the first one to decide I have had all I can stand.” The six-page manifesto, which link you’ll find below, is dated “2/18/10″ and is signed “Joe Stack (1956-2010).” Andrew Joseph Stack, 53, has been identified as the man who flew a small plane into an Austin building housing IRS offices. The statement was uploaded to the front page of a web site that was registered in 2003 by a Joe Stack, who listed an address in San Marcos, Texas, which is about 35 miles south of Austin. The online posting is titled “Well Mr. Big Brother IRS man… take my pound of flesh and sleep well.”

What Happend to Alexander McQueen

By R. February 11th, 2010, under Fashion

According to AP famous British fashion designer Alexander McQueen was found dead in his London home Thursday, his company announced. He was 40 years old. Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

His body was discovered at the property in Green Street, central London, shortly after 10am today. Paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A postmortem has been scheduled but police said his death was not being treated as suspicious. They would not comment on reports he had killed himself.

A spokeswoman for McQueen said: “Mr McQueen was found dead this morning at his home. We’re devastated and I hope you understand that out of respect to his family and his colleagues we’re not going to be making any further statement.”

The death comes days before the start of London fashion week and a month before the designer was to unveil his new collection at Paris fashion week.

His family asked for privacy to come to terms with the death of McQueen, whose first name was Lee.

His company, Alexander McQueen, issued a statement saying: “On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.”

“McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs,” said Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue.

Hal Rubenstein, a fashion director for InStyle magazine, said McQueen started out tough and angry — in his work and attitude — but softened over time as he felt more appreciated by the industry.

McQueen, he said, was a master of integration of technology into fashion.

“He changed the way so many of us see shows.”

Vivienne Westwood, perhaps Britain’s most revered designer, said she was “incredibly sorry” to hear of McQueen’s death. Model Kate Moss, another McQueen aficionado, said she was devastated at the loss of her dear friend.

Little was immediately known about the circumstances surrounding his death, which came as the fashion elite was gathered in New York for a series of catwalk shows.

Recently posted comments on his Twitter page showed signs of anguish over the Feb. 2 death of his mother.

He said he wanted his mother to rest in peace and said, “But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Using an obscenity, he added that he had had an “awful week” and said he had to “some how pull myself together and finish.”

A presentation of McQueen’s secondary label, McQ, had been scheduled for Thursday’s opening day of New York Fashion Week.

McQueen had never been expected at the show, which was quickly canceled.

The designer received his early fashion training at the Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design, long recognized for its fashion-forward approach and encouragement of Britain’s talented young designers.

He learned the finer points of traditional men’s tailoring at two famous, conservative Savile Row houses: Anderson and Sheppard and also Gieves and Hawkes.

“He was 16 when he came here,” said John Hitchcock of Anderson and Sheppard. “He was a boy from Essex, he wanted to learn tailoring. He was a little bit different — he was very ambitious.”

He said McQueen’s success had inspired the next generation of designers.

After his Savile Row stint, McQueen started to develop his trademark, more theatrical designs, working with several other brands before first starting his own label in 1992.

He quickly earned a reputation for innovation that lasted until his death. His last name soon entered the fashion lexicon and become synonymous with new and cutting edge.

The company he founded was purchased by the Gucci Group, and he retained creative control of his own brand.

His runway shows — more often like performance pieces because they were so dramatic, and sometimes, bizarre — were always a highlight during the Paris ready-to-wear fashion week.

One of his previous collections included a show built around the concept of recycling, with models donning extravagant headwear made out of trash. His last collection, shown in October in Paris, featured elaborate and highly structured cocktail dresses. Critics raved.

His edgy creations have been seen on numerous red carpets, worn by A-list actresses, including Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz.

Lady Gaga recently made waves when she wore McQueen’s spring 2010 lobster-claw shoes in her “Bad Romance” music video.

Amy Winehouse is Still Smiling

By R. January 21st, 2010, under Movie TV Music

Reported, Amy Winehouse given two year conditional for assault. District Judge Peter Crabtree gave her a conditional discharge to keep her ‘on the straight and narrow’ – and told her she should have no trouble paying £85 costs and compensating her victim £100. This allowed the smiling singer to walk free, but means she will be re-sentenced if she offends again within two years. The assault happened during a booze-fuelled afternoon at Milton Keynes Theatre on December 19.

Law Update 2010

By R. January 2nd, 2010, under Law

This year will take effect about 100 new laws which include such bans as checking e-mail, updating Facebook and Web surfing while driving.

“It’s now illegal to operate a motor vehicle and text at the same time, and it’s also illegal to use a cell phone in a school zone, in a construction zone or a maintenance zone.”

“If people are injured or killed, and I find a cell phone in the car, then what I’m going to end up doing is getting a search warrant to be able to obtain information off the phone to find out whether or not they were on the phone at the time of the crash and if the are, then that will enhance the charges on it,” said Deputy Moore.

“If you think about it, next time you’re on your cell phone when you hang up your cell phone try to remember what you just passed and you probably won’t because people, act the same way a drunk acts, they can’t remember where they’re at or what they just passed.”
